Proverbs 8

Wisdom Calling

Imagine a modest man with black glasses standing in a corn field in Kansas… or in the middle of a traffic jam in a major metropolitan city… or riding in a taxi heading to the hospital… or outside a small diner in the middle of nowhere. You’ve seen him, but don’t know his name. He keeps asking that same question over and over–“Can you hear me now?” Now you know who he is–he’s the Verizon guy, making sure you have excellent cell phone reception, even in the most remote areas of the U.S.

There is another, calling you and asking the question, “Can you hear me now?” This call also reaches remote areas. It is wisdom calling: “I raise my voice to all mankind” (vs. 4). Have you picked up on the call? Are you hearing what wisdom has to say? How are you responding to its call? Unless you are listening with your spiritual ears, you may miss wisdom’s message through the internal and external static and clutter of everyday life.

What are the companions of wisdom? They are prudence (good sense, caution, discretion, forethought), understanding (knowledge, awareness, skill, appreciation), wise counsel and a hatred of pride, arrogance and evil behavior.

What is the reward for following wisdom? Verse 35 says, “For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord.”

Question for the day: If wisdom is so accessible and the benefits of finding wisdom so wonderful, why are you and I not always seeking to find it? If you’re not on a path to seek His wisdom, start today. If you are on the path, keep moving forward in the pursuit of wisdom with me. Take time right now to answer the call of wisdom and read Proverbs 8. Seek His word and learn of Him. You will receive the favor of God in your life.
