Proverbs 25

In Chapter 25, the term “like” is given or inserted nine times (10 in the NASB). It is used for stating an analogy or a similitude. King Solomon employs examples from nature, or illustrations from life in general, that his readers could easily understand to show that followers of Jehovah God should resemble His teachings in their words and in their deeds (works).

Solomon says our words can be a blessing or a cursing. James mentions the same problem in his letter to believers concerning our tongue, “With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same month proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.”(James 3:9-10) Winsome responses (v. 11), wise reproofs (v. 12), and welcome reports (v. 25) all bless the hearers. The Apostle Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:29 and Colossians 4:6 that our well-chosen words will impart grace (like seasoning our food with salt – yum!) On the contrary, prideful words disappoint (v. 14), untruthful words destroy (v. 18), and unmindful words tend to deepen grief (v. 20).

Just as Paul encouraged young Timothy to be an example in speech and conduct (I Timothy 4:12), so Solomon exhorts us to watch not only our words, but also our works. A faithful man blesses those around him (v. 13), but a faithless man kindles hurt (v. 19), can cause harm (v. 26), and will leave one helpless in difficult times (v. 28).

Everything we say and do has consequences. As a believer in Jesus Christ, you are a walking, talking, advertisement for our Lord. Pray today that God would use the words you say to people and the works you do for people to bless and bring them closer to the Savior. II Corinthians 5:20 says we are Ambassadors for Christ–let’s report for duty and serve the Master!
