Proverb 24

Three Lessons to Live By

Verse 1
This is not the first time we have heard this. It has been repeated many times because it is important to live by this command. Psalm 73:3-9 deals with the same subject. This is something that has probably bothered all of us–why do the ungodly seem to prosper and get away with their sin? Psalm 73:17 answers the question by reminding us of their end. God will deal with them and we need to leave it up to Him. Remember to see things from God’s point of view and trust Him.

Verse 6
The wise person is not self-reliant. The prideful person is self-reliant. We are a body of believers. We all have different strength and weaknesses. We need to be willing to help each other and seek for ourselves counsel from those who are experts in the area in which we might be waging war. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 tells us that we are to comfort others with the comfort God has shown us. We all have experienced God’s grace in circumstances that can help others who are dealing with the same. Also, I cannot always trust myself and what my gut is telling me. I sometimes need a second opinion. Don’t be afraid to seek counsel. There is victory in an abundance of counselors.

Verse 17
Rejoicing over the misfortune of others is a practice of which God does not approve, even when the other person is someone who is our adversary, or is the adversary to righteousness and the things of God. Instead, God’s word says we are to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matt. 5:44). It is a tempting behavior, yet knowing that God is displeased should warn us away from this activity.
