Proverbs 2

Wisdom Is to Be Considered a Treasure

The Difficulty in Cultivating Wisdom (v. 1-5)

Chapter 1 of the book of Proverbs instructs us that wisdom wants us to adopt her (1:20-33). Even though, wisdom is hard to obtain. It does not come quickly or easily. It requires devotion to God and His Word.

Warren Wiersbe said, “If you want wisdom, you must listen to God attentively (Matt. 13:9), obey Him humbly (John 17:17), ask Him sincerely (James 1:5), and seek Him diligently (Isa. 55:6-7), the way a miner searches for silver and gold (2:4).” If we are to obtain spiritual wisdom, it will take more than a "hobby” attitude. It will take the discipline of a lifetime study. We live in a world that desires instant gratification, and we are out of the habit of daily investing time and energy into anything, especially digging into Scripture. We want the greatest reward for the least effort.

God is the giver of wisdom (v. 6-9)

“The Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding (2:6)”. If we are to learn how to live wisely, we must study God’s Word and ask for wisdom (2:7). Godly wisdom can be seen through right living and correct behavior (v. 7-9). God is the source of this wisdom and only through our relationship with Him can we truly be wise and experience its blessings of right living.

The fruit of wisdom (2:10-22)

Wisdom helps safeguard us morally by delivering us from the “way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things" (2:12). When we submit ourselves to God and gain wisdom, the ways of the wicked will lose some of their attractiveness. The wise will see that what the world offers, she cannot deliver long term.
