Proverbs 18

From the presentation of my Ordination Bible on April 25, 1984 to the present, I have underlined nine verses in Proverbs 18 that have particularly spoken to my heart during those years of pilgrimage.

  • At some point in time, verse 9 reminded me to not waste time and to be diligent in my work.
  • Verse 10 is both underlined and circled, meaning that, at some point, I was in need of a place of refuge “knowing that the name of the Lord is a strong tower and the righteous run into it and is safe.”
  • Verse 12 is underlined reminding me that God honors the humble.
  • Verses 13 and 21 are connected in my Bible, along with the written admonition to “listen first!” and to read again the 3rd chapter of James, concerning the use of the tongue.
  • Verse 16 is connected to verse 12 and reminds me that the honor that comes from humility will bring us before great men.
  • Verse 19 is the next to be underscored, reminding me of truths concerning difficulties which arise from offenses.
  • Verse 22 is underscored, circled and starred (the strongest notation in my Bible) with the words penned to the side “thank you Lord for Miska.” Of course that verse tells us, “whoso finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor of the Lord.”
  • The last verse underlined in this chapter is verse 24, reminding me of the constancy and fellowship of the Lord Jesus, Who is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother.

To the growing Christian, Proverbs are landmarks along life’s way. Perhaps, we share similar sign posts. If so, our paths have crossed. If so, we are alike. If so, be reminded that we are family—brothers and sisters in Christ, who share like blessings, and at the same time, like challenges. We never run alone. Let’s run with wisdom and finish strong!
